There is a summary question worth a few marks based on a passage. I never know how short to make it or whether I can copy lines from the passage.
Read the given paragraph twice and underline the key points only, ignoring examples and repetitions. The HSC summary should be about one-third of the original length, so count roughly and aim for that. Write it in your own words as far as possible; lifting full sentences loses marks. Give it a short suitable title, then write the summary as a single connected paragraph in the third person and past or present tense as appropriate. Do not add your own opinions or new information. Use linking words like 'therefore', 'however' and 'moreover' to keep it smooth. Finish by writing the word count in brackets, as the board expects it. Accuracy of main ideas plus brevity is what earns full marks.
