In subjects like Physics and Chemistry, half the Class 12 syllabus needs Class 11 basics, but I forget them. How do I retain over a long gap?
Long-term retention comes from spaced revision, not one-time cramming. Use the principle of revisiting a topic at increasing intervals: revise a new chapter after one day, then a week, then a month, which moves it into long-term memory far better than rereading it once. Maintain concise revision notes or formula sheets per chapter so a refresh takes minutes, not hours. For subjects where Class 12 builds on Class 11, like Physics and Organic Chemistry, deliberately revise the linked Class 11 chapter just before starting the related Class 12 one, so the connection stays alive. Self-testing through quick quizzes or previous year questions forces recall, which strengthens memory more than passive reading. Build a weekly slot only for revising old chapters. Consistency over months is what prevents the panic of relearning everything before boards.
