A shirt costs 240 rupees and there is a 25% discount. I am not sure if I should find 25% and stop there or do another step to get the final price.
A discount means the percentage is taken off the original price, so there are two steps. First find 25% of 240. Since 25% is the same as one quarter, 25% of 240 = 240 ÷ 4 = 60. This 60 rupees is the amount you save, not the final price. The second step is to subtract the discount from the original: 240 − 60 = 180. So the shirt finally costs 180 rupees. A faster method is to realise that after a 25% discount you pay 75% of the price, and 75% of 240 = (75/100) × 240 = 180, giving the same answer in one step. In discount sums, always read whether they want the saving or the final price.
