I have to label muscle tissues for my exam but I keep confusing voluntary and involuntary ones. Can someone list them clearly?
There are three types of muscle tissue. Striated (skeletal) muscle is attached to bones, has long cylindrical fibres with light and dark bands, and is multinucleated. It is voluntary, meaning it works under your conscious control, like moving your arm. Smooth (unstriated) muscle has spindle-shaped cells with a single central nucleus and no bands. It is involuntary and is found in the walls of internal organs like the stomach, intestines and blood vessels. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart wall. Its fibres are branched, striated and joined by special junctions called intercalated discs, and it is involuntary, contracting rhythmically your whole life without tiring. A simple memory trick: skeletal is under your control, smooth and cardiac are automatic.
