We have both a globe and an atlas at home. Both show the Earth, so why do we need maps if a globe already shows everything more accurately?
A globe is a true, three-dimensional model of the Earth, so it shows the correct shapes, sizes, directions and distances of continents and oceans without distortion. But a globe has drawbacks: it is bulky, you can only see one half at a time, and you cannot show small areas in detail or carry it around easily. A map is a flat drawing of the Earth or part of it on paper. Maps are easy to carry, can be folded, can show the whole world at once, and can be made for small areas in great detail, like your city or a road. The downside is that flattening a round Earth onto flat paper causes some distortion in shape or size. So we use a globe for an accurate overall view and maps for detail, portability and everyday use.
