Our IT chapter lists LAN, MAN and WAN but the only difference seems to be size. Is there anything else I should write in the exam to get full marks?
The main difference is geographical area, but you should add ownership and speed for full marks. A LAN, local area network, covers a small area like a single building, school or office; it is usually owned privately and offers high speed at low cost. A MAN, metropolitan area network, spans a city or large campus, connecting several LANs, for example a cable TV network or a citywide office network. A WAN, wide area network, covers very large areas like countries or continents, connecting many LANs and MANs; the internet is the largest WAN. As the area grows from LAN to MAN to WAN, the cost and complexity rise while the data transfer speed generally falls. State the area, ownership and an example for each to score well.
