I thought marketing and selling were the same thing. My textbook says they are different concepts but I can't tell exactly how.
Selling is a narrow concept focused on transferring goods to customers and earning revenue, with the goal of converting products into cash. Marketing is a much wider concept that starts before production and continues after sale; it focuses on identifying and satisfying customer needs. In selling, the emphasis is on the seller's needs and pushing existing products, whereas in marketing the emphasis is on the buyer's needs and creating products customers want. Selling begins after the product is made; marketing begins with market research before the product is even designed. Selling aims at maximising profit through higher sales volume, while marketing aims at profit through customer satisfaction and long-term relationships. In short, selling is one activity within the broader process of marketing. Modern businesses follow the marketing concept because satisfied customers ensure repeat business and lasting success.
