I have read about Subhas Chandra Bose and the Azad Hind Fauj but I am not clear on what they actually achieved since they did not defeat the British militarily. Why are they important?
Subhas Chandra Bose reorganised the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) in 1943 from Indian prisoners of war and civilians in South-East Asia, with the slogan 'Give me blood and I will give you freedom'. With Japanese support, the INA fought the British in regions like Imphal and Kohima. Although it did not win militarily and was pushed back, its importance lies elsewhere. It showed that Indians, including the Rani Jhansi women's regiment, were willing to fight and die for freedom, inspiring patriotism across the country. After the war, the British trials of INA officers at the Red Fort triggered huge public protests and even unrest in the armed forces. This convinced the British that they could no longer rely on Indian soldiers to hold the empire, hastening their decision to leave India.
