Mumbai home tuition fee index — August 2026
This is the August 2026 edition of our Mumbai home tuition fee index — what home tuition actually costs across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, computed from live data on this marketplace: the hourly rates tutors list on their profiles, and the hourly budgets families enter when they post a requirement. No survey, no estimates — these are the two real sides of the same market, published together.
Across the Mumbai region this month, the median asking rate across 190 active tutor listings is ₹500 per hour, and the median budget families offer across 86 posted requirements is ₹450 per hour (typical range ₹200 – ₹1,000). All figures on this page are per hour, in rupees, and every number shows the sample size (n) it was computed from.
Fees by class level
| Class | Tutor asking median /hr | Tutors (n) | Family offer median /hr | Typical offer /hr | Requirements (n) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 1–5 (Primary) | ₹500 | 112 | ₹300 | ₹200 – ₹1,000 | 30 |
| Class 6–8 (Middle) | ₹500 | 113 | ₹450 | ₹300 – ₹700 | 22 |
| Class 9–10 | ₹500 | 94 | ₹500 | ₹200 – ₹500 | 10 |
| Class 11–12 | ₹600 | 55 | ₹600 | ₹500 – ₹2,000 | 5 |
| Competitive exams (JEE / NEET) | ₹950 | 4 | ₹600 | ₹500 – ₹1,000 | 5 |
Rates rise with class level — senior secondary and competitive-exam tuition needs subject specialists, so those rows sit above primary and middle school. A dash means we had fewer than 3 data points for that cell and would rather show nothing than guess.

How this index is computed
- Source. Live tutor listings and posted student requirements on TuitionsinIndia, all data to date as of August 2026. 190 active listings with a listed hourly rate and 86 requirements with a stated hourly budget across the Mumbai region went into this edition.
- Medians, not averages. Every headline figure is a median, and ranges are the middle half (25th–75th percentile), so one unusually expensive or cheap entry cannot move a number.
- Hourly rates. Both sides are ₹ per hour. For a typical 3-classes-a-week arrangement, monthly spend is roughly 12–13× the hourly rate.
- Small samples suppressed. Any cell with fewer than 3 data points shows a dash. Sample sizes are printed next to every figure.
- What this is not. This reflects activity on one marketplace, not a census of all tuition in Mumbai. Areas with few listings here may still have plenty of tutors offline. Treat the figures as a grounded reference point for negotiation, not a citywide rule.
Why do tutor asking rates and family budgets differ?
They are two different opening positions in the same negotiation. Tutors list the rate they would like; families state the budget they hope to stay inside. Where the two medians sit close together, deals close quickly; a wide gap usually narrows once class level, travel distance and schedule are agreed. Comparing both columns before you talk to anyone puts realistic numbers on the table from the start.
How much should I pay for a home tutor in Mumbai?
Start from the median for your child's class in the table above, then adjust for your area and for online versus at-home classes — home tutors price in travel time, so online classes for the same tutor usually cost less. Every tutor on TuitionsinIndia lists their hourly rate on their profile, so you can compare directly before contacting anyone.
Are these fees fixed or negotiable?
Negotiable, almost always. The index shows where the middle of the market sits, not what any individual tutor must charge. Class frequency, travel distance, number of subjects and exam pressure all move the final figure — which is why we publish ranges alongside medians.
