What home tutors in Mumbai actually charge per hour (2026): real numbers from 314 tutor profiles
Most fee guides for home tuition in Mumbai are guesswork. This one is not.
We looked at every active tutor profile on TuitionsinIndia that lists an hourly rate — 314 of them — and at what students and parents said they were willing to pay when they posted a requirement. Below are the real numbers, and what they mean when you are sitting down to agree a fee with a tutor.
A note on where these come from, so you can judge them yourself: the rates are what tutors put on their own profiles, and the budgets are what families wrote when posting a requirement. Nobody audits either number. They tell you what the market is asking and offering, which is exactly what you need before you negotiate — but they are not a survey of signed contracts.
What Mumbai tutors charge per hour
Across 314 active tutor profiles with a stated rate:

So the honest headline is: ₹500 an hour is the middle of the Mumbai market. Half the tutors on the platform ask less than that, half ask more. If a tutor quotes you ₹450, they are not cutting corners — they are in the normal range. If a tutor quotes ₹1,200, they are asking for roughly double the typical rate, and it is completely fair to ask what you get for it.
What families say they will pay
On the other side of the table, the median budget posted with a Mumbai requirement is also ₹500 per hour, across 55 requirements that named a figure.
That is a useful thing to know: supply and demand in Mumbai are meeting at almost exactly the same number. Parents are not lowballing and tutors are not overcharging, on the whole. Where you see a gap is at the edges — the lowest budgets posted were around ₹60–₹125 an hour, which almost no qualified tutor in Mumbai will accept for one-to-one teaching at home.
Rates by subject
Budgets vary more by subject than most parents expect. From requirements that named a subject and a figure:

Two things stand out.
English has the widest spread. A basic school-English tutor and an exam-focused or spoken-English coach are very different jobs, and the fees reflect that. When you post a requirement for English, say which one you want or you will get applications from both.
"All subjects" is mostly a primary-school request and attracts the lowest budgets — but also the smallest pool of tutors willing to take it, because one tutor covering five subjects is harder work than it sounds. If your child is in Class 1 to 5, expect to pay near the ₹500 mark rather than the ₹125 some requirements ask for.
What actually moves the price
Four things, roughly in order of how much they matter:
- Class level. Class 11 and 12, especially science, costs meaningfully more than primary or middle school. The tutor pool is smaller and the stakes are higher.
- Travel. A tutor coming to your home in Mumbai traffic is giving up an hour or more on top of the lesson. Tutors who live in or near your area will quote less than one crossing the city, for the same teaching. This is the single easiest way to lower your fee honestly — search locally first.
- One-to-one versus a small group. Two or three children sharing a tutor cuts the per-child cost sharply. If a neighbour's child is in the same class, ask.
- Online versus at home. Online tuition removes travel entirely and is usually cheaper. For older students who can sit and focus, it works well. For young children, home tuition is generally worth the extra.
Experience and qualifications matter too, but less than parents assume at the school level. A patient tutor who your child actually listens to beats an impressive degree almost every time.
How to agree a fee without either side feeling cheated
Agree the rate before the first class, in writing. A message on WhatsApp is enough. Say the amount, per how long, how many days a week, and when you pay — monthly in advance is the norm in Mumbai.
Ask what a "session" means. Some tutors teach 60 minutes, some 90. A ₹700 tutor teaching 90 minutes is cheaper per hour than a ₹500 tutor teaching 45.
Do a paid or free demo class first. Most tutors will do one. Watch part of it. You will learn more in that half hour than from any profile.
Settle what happens to missed classes at the start. Does a cancelled class get made up, or is it lost? Whichever you agree is fine — not agreeing is what causes arguments in month three.
Do not pay several months up front to a tutor you have just met, however good the discount sounds.
