I can turn percentages into fractions but going the other way from 7/8 to a percentage confuses me. Do I just multiply by 100?
Yes, to change any fraction into a percentage you multiply it by 100 and add the percent sign. So 7/8 as a percentage is (7/8) × 100. Calculate the numerator first: 7 × 100 = 700, giving 700/8. Now divide: 700 ÷ 8 = 87.5. So 7/8 = 87.5%. The reason multiplying by 100 works is that a percentage is just a fraction out of 100, so you are finding how many hundredths your fraction equals. To go back the other way, you would divide the percentage by 100. A handy check: 7/8 is close to 1 but a bit less, and 87.5% is close to 100% but a bit less, so the answer makes sense.
